3. Metalspread Classification
The “Metalspread Classification” column in the code directory assigns each HS code to one of 12 analytics categories used to group and filter import data on the metalspread platform — powering charts, breakdowns, and time-series comparisons. Four of these categories also have sub-categories for deeper drill-down.
Why classify beyond the HS code? Raw 8-digit codes are too granular for analytics. DGCIS’s own Principal Commodity (PC Group) is too coarse — it lumps silver jewellery into “Gold & Precious Metal Jewellery” and merges waste/scrap with clad metals under “Other Precious & Base Metals.” The Metalspread classification sits in between: each category represents a distinct trade signal an analyst would want to isolate or compare.
Classification basis. Each code is assigned based on two dimensions: primary metal (gold, silver, or mixed) and product form(bullion, semi-manufactured, jewellery, wares, recovery, clad, or coin). Codes that span multiple metals go into shared categories. Small forms (clad semi-manufactured and coin) are combined into “Clad & Coin” to keep chart legends and filters manageable. Legacy codes from previous revisions are classified into the same category as their active successors.
